8 Reasons Why You Should Sign Up for Informed Delivery from USPS

Are you one of those people who anxiously await the mail of the day? I know individuals that will not leave the house until they see if a letter, bill or check has arrived. Imagine their disappointment when they’ve waited all day for nothing. But now, the United States Postal Service has made it easier for us to get on with our day…as it pertains to snail mail and packages – with Informed Delivery from USPS. You can now digitally preview your postal mail and anticipate incoming packages to your mailing address.

1. Receive photocopies of your mail. Informed Delivery provides greyscale images of the exterior of the address side of letter-sized pieces of mail that are processed through USPS’ automated equipment.

2. Know what letters or bills are on its way. From your cable bill to a letter from Grandma to Christmas cards, you will know beforehand when these items will reach your mailbox. I receive my Informed Delivery Daily Digest between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

3. Track packages in one place. You’ll know when to anticipate packages, as well as receive information on shipping departures, delivery dates, and sender details.

4. It’s free and sign-up is easy. All you need is an USPS account. If you don’t have an USPS account, sign up for one and then for Informed Delivery from USPS by verifying your identity, personal information, and address. Then, you’re all signed up to view notifications from any computer, smartphone, or tablet.

5. Keep an eye on mail delivery when traveling. Whether you have someone picking up your mail for you, or you’ve paused delivery…Informed Delivery lets you keep track of postal activity taking place when you’re not at home.

6. Know when your package has been swiped, misplaced or picked up “accidentally” by your neighbor. Informed Delivery allows you to follow the journey of your packages and report missing mail pieces and packages. For pieces of mail that don’t reach your mailbox, you check a box “I didn’t receive this mailpiece.”

7. Eliminate the anxious anticipation of today’s mail. Whether you are awaiting a piece of “good” or “bad” mail, Informed Delivery allows you to free up your day, mind and energy when you already know what to expect. Some people wait around all day for mail delivery.

8. Stop bugging the mailman. With Informed Delivery, you don’t have to stalk the mailman to see if a check, college acceptance letter, or sweepstakes win is in the mail. Since you already know what to expect, you don’t have to mob the mailman when he or she is in the neighborhood.

What I’ve Learned about Informed Delivery is…

  • Your magazine subscriptions are not scanned or tracked.
  • Smaller packages, like freebies and samples, are not scanned or tracked.
  • Only one household member has to sign up for Informed Delivery, and you will be able to see anticipated mail delivery for every individual attached to that address.

  • Informed Delivery is not available everywhere yet, so before signing up, simply enter your zip code on their site to check – I live in Syracuse, NY and it is available here (obviously).

Have you signed up yet? What do you think?

There are so many idiots out there who willingly give the government access to their mail. They shouldn’t complain when it backfires on them.

    1. Yona Williams says:

Thanks for sharing your opinion, Bob. However, the post office is already scanning EVERYONE’s mail as part of their process. Informed Delivery gives us access to see the mail we’ll be getting ahead of time. Signing up for it isn’t giving the government access to information they don’t already have or know. This system is similar to how the bank provides scans of processed checks in your activity log (if you do online banking).

  2. I do this because I worry about not knowing when packages are delivered to my front door when I am at work. It’s a great way to keep track of your mail and deliveries.

Wow, I definitely want to do this. My landlord left us with a very precarious mail situation. The mailbox doesn’t have a lock and is on a main stress in a major city. I’m always terrified my mail will get swiped because it is just so easy. This would bring piece of mind to be able to verify what was sent to me.
