I Want…a Weighted Blanket

I just read in the latest issue of People magazine that there is a weighted blanket designed to improve sleep, as well as combat stress and anxiety. It’s called a ‘Gravity Blanket,’ and it’s supposed to simulate the feeling of being hugged (or held). I can see how something like this would create a more comforting sleep. From reading the description, I could definitely benefit from something like this.

So, I visited Gravity Blankets to learn more.

Made to ‘match’ approximately 7-12% percent of your body weight, the Gravity Blanket is supposed to reduce stress and provide relaxation while you catch your zzz’s. By relaxing the nervous system, your body experiences increased serotonin and melatonin levels. Cortisol levels should also decrease. All of the above contributes to an improved mood, and the ability to capture a restful slumber. They also state that weighted blankets have been proven to provide positive benefits to people with medical conditions, such as PTSD, autism, and insomnia. I do not need this blanket, but I think that it would be a really pleasant item to have.

The Gravity Blanket measures 48″x72, and is currently available in three different weights: 15 lb., 20 lb. and 25 lb. The size of the blanket is meant for one person to use at a time. By looking at the photo of it, the blanket looks incredibly soft and snuggly.

I’d love to test one of these things out. Anyways, the cost for a weighted Gravity Blanket is $279 (waaaaay out of my price comfort zone), and is now available for pre-order. Gravity Products, LLC was able to raise over $4.7 million through Kickstarter to get this project off the ground, and they are ready to share their product with the world. The current price shown on their site is for $249, but I’m sure the price will most likely come down during certain holidays and special promotions.

Do you think you’d benefit from a weighted blanket?

When I taught children with special needs, we used weighted blankets with some of our kids who have autism. They loved the weight and it helped them to relax and feel more comfortable. The ones we had in the classroom were homemade…I’m guessing because they are so expensive. Thank you for the great information!
