“The Book of Eli” Movie Review
Posted on Wednesday, January 20th, 2010
After seeing a commercial for ‘Book of Eli’ that states Denzel Washington has “never been better”, I’m motivated to write a review on the film. I was thoroughly upset that I chose to watch this movie on a pleasantly cool night at the drive-in. If I were Denzel, I’d be upset too. I think this movie is one of the worst I’ve seen in awhile. Yes, there is a slight twist at the end of the movie, but at what cost – nearly 2 hours of watching Denzel trek through a dusty, futuristic setting, where water is called ‘the good stuff.’
I like Gary Oldman (from ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’) as an actor and was pleasantly surprised when I saw Jennifer Beales (from ‘Flashdance’ fame) get a role as a blind woman at the mercy of her lover. The movie offers a couple flashes of action. A sword fight here. Some flying bullets there. However, I was unimpressed and so were the two males accompanying me, so I swear it’s not a ‘female’ thing.
However, to say this is the best work of Denzel Washington is an atrocity. What about ‘Glory?’ Do you remember his Oscar-winning performance as bad guy Alonzo in ‘Training Day?’ But this? My final thoughts: the movie was as dry as the desert he travels across.
