Wine Ice Cream – Mercer’s Dairy

A trip to Sylvan Beach last summer allowed me to sample an incredibly delicious frozen treat – wine ice cream. Mercer’s Dairy of New York State has been in the frozen treat business for more than 50 years. Mercer’s (located in Boonville, NY) uses wine produced from one of the oldest vineyards in the country, Brotherhood Winery to create flavors, such as Red Raspberry Chardonnay, Chocolate Cabernet, Cherry Merlot, Peach White Zinfandel, and Royal White Riesling and Ala Port.
I had the dilemma of choosing between Red Raspberry Chardonnay and Chocolate Cabernet, opting for the fruitier of the two. There’s more than just a hint of wine contained in the serving, but it’s not overwhelming. I’d have to say it’s a gentle blend of wine and a sorbet like fruit consistency. It actually made my tongue tingle… but in a good way. Since the ice cream contains 5% alcohol, you actually have to be 21 years of age to enjoy this sweet treat.
The restaurant that serves the wine ice cream at Sylvan Beach is called Splash’s Bar-B-Que & Pub and they also have a delicious burger that I’ve enjoyed on more than one occasion. Pints are usually sold for $6 and at Splash’s, I enjoyed a decent cupful for about $4. This eatery can be found at the corner of Main Street and 14th Ave.
